Sustainable Prisons Project for The New York Times

I had the pleasure of photographing the inmates at the Cedar Creek Corrections Center working on raising endangered Oregon Spotted Frogs to be released back into the wild. This is the first, of I hope many, successful pitches to a publication. Usually it happens the other way around, starting with the reporter, so this was an exciting change for me. I have shot imprisons before, but this was a very positive change. The inmates in the Sustainable Prison Project were excited to be working in the expansive gardens scattered throughout the center, the large composting operation, and in the more specialized programs such as bee keeping, and in this case, raising frogs. It seemed as if they took real pride in their work and many explained to me the complex ecological relationships they came to understand as they worked with the land.

3-D Printing for The Chronicle of Higher Education

I had an interesting assignment request several weeks ago to shoot a 3-D printing lab at the University of Washington. The lab was a cluttered collection of machines buzzing away making everything from owls, cookies, cogs, and machine parts to make more 3-D printing machines or "bots". Brandon Bowman, who works in the Soldheim Lab, was a great sport as I tried to capture details and the process that happens between computer and 3-D printer. I decided to try a new approach with portraits and use video lights, or constant light sources instead of strobes. It was a low light situation to begin with, so using less powerful lights really worked well and they were much less cumbersome than using strobes. I'm interested to try more portraits with LED lights and tungsten lights in future assignments. Here is a selection of images from the shoot.

Downtown Association for Seattle Business

A couple of weeks ago I shot some portraits for Seattle Business. Portrait shoots are always challenging, especially when the subjects don't have a lot of time and they want to shoot on a bright sunny day during the noon hour. It was fun hauling some lights around the city trying to make some interesting images. Here are some of the tearsheets from the magazine.

Maria Semple for The New York Times

A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of spending some time with Maria Semple. Maria, a novelist and screen writer who wrote for the hit show Arrested Development, lives in downtown Seattle and recently released her new book, "Where'd You Go, Bernadette". Tomo and Frida for The New York Times

It's been an incredibly busy month with wedding planning (of my own), shooting assignments, and spending time with family and friends. I recently shot a wedding for The New York Times, which was a blast. Frida and Tomo had a simple, yet elegant ceremony in West Seattle followed by a fun reception at The Columbia City Theater where local musicians played throughout the night. View Slideshow Here>>>

Elwha Dam Removal for The New York Times

Whew....it's been a busy month of flying around from San Francisco to Portland, Maine. I'll be posting some pics from those trips at a later date, but for now, here is a shoot I just did for The New York Times on the effects of the dam removal on the Elwha River. I spent the afternoon on a boat in the Strait of San Juan de Fuca trying not to lose what little breakfast I had eaten that morning from the hour long boat ride up and down the large ocean waves. Sustainable Agriculture for The New York Times

I spent last weekend visiting a couple of farming operations in the Seattle area. The first was a visit to Alm Hill Gardens near Bellingham, Washington. One of my favorite things about working for the Times is that I get to go to travel the backroads of Washington going to places I wouldn't normally go. The drive out to Alm Hill Gardens was in the beautiful rolling hills below Mt. Baker (unfortunately shrouded in clouds). It was great to visit the people at the farm and get to snack on some of the fresh produce they were growing. Here is a selection of some of the images that didn't make it into the article.
