Whooping Cough for The New York Times

Last week I headed up to Mt. Vernon to photograph the town and people getting their Pertussis vaccines. It was an interesting shoot as people getting a shot in the arm takes about 20 seconds and most people aren't' scared of needles. Retirement for The New York Times

I had a fun shoot last week photographing a mother and daughter who both work at the Walmart in Bremerton, Washington. Ethel Rusher, 72, and her mother Louise King, 92, work side by side at Walmart from 3PM to 11PM, 5 days a week. It was a quick portrait shoot on a seamless background, that was matched with three other portraits taken from other photographers around the country, but I think the two subjects complimented each other very well. It's not everyday you get to shoot a CEO of a big company and when it does happen, it's usually a quick shoot. The subject comes in, smiles for the camera, then you're done - and let's not forget the handful of lingering PR people looking over your shoulder. I had about an hour to set up a couple of different scenarios and about 20 minutes to move him around the space to some pre-conceived setups. It's always a fun and challenging experience, and luckily Jeff was a good sport. Occupy Something....

I'm not much for shooting protests these days as they all sort of end up looking exactly the same unless something happens out of the ordinary, so when I heard things were getting out of hand I headed downtown to see what was going on. Of course, that's not how these things work, and all the action was settling down when I got there, but I got a couple of shots that I sort of like.

Small Farms on Vashon Island

Last week I ventured out again to Vashon Island to explore some of the small farms. My first stop was at Kurtwood Farms, where I met Kurt Timmermeister to photograph him milking his beautiful dairy cows. This was my second time visiting with Kurt and it is always a pleasure to chat over coffee and biscuits about writing, photography, and small farms on the island. It was a typically rainy morning, but it made for some interesting shooting nonetheless. My second stop was at Langley Fine Gardens, where I met Leda and her husband Matt, who run a wonderful business growing and selling plant starts. The lines and colors that filled the greenhouses were fun to photograph as the workers made their way through the rows and rows of plants in preparation for an upcoming farmer's market. Funeral Services Program for The Chronicle of Higher Education

Several months ago I shot a pretty interesting assignment for The Chronicle of Higher Education on Beth Ann Grouell, a student at Lake Washington Institute of Technology, who is studying Funeral Sciences. I spent a couple of hours with her in class as she worked on her "death mask".
