Gang Violence in Rio
Walking through the streets of Rio we explored a little bit of Rocinha and then on our way back home stumbled onto a scene of a recent shootout involving the police and members of a local gang in Copacabana. From what I could gather there were three people with guns and drugs in a van that was ambushed by the police. Two got away, although injured, and the one was taken away by the police. It was a little surreal, but I will let the pictures do the talking.

24 Hours of Travel
In the name of saving money Terry and I booked a flight from Miami to Costa Rica to Peru to Brazil with long layovers and lots of down time. This may not have been the best idea, but all is good in hindsight. Anyhow, after lots of bumpy flights and multilingual flight attendants repeating the safety information two or three times to account for the language barriers we finally arrived in Rio de Janeiro. We have just been walking around trying to figure things out and get acclimatized, but it has been an experience. The people seem to be very nice, and like in Asia, love loud, gaudy, American music and sitting outside drinking beers in the middle of the day. All for now...

Miami
Terry and I have been in Miami for two days just trying to relax before hopping on a plane towards Rio de Janeiro tomorrow morning. I am fighting off a cold, which sort of sucks, and the timing couldn't be worse, but that's how it works I guess. We are both very excited and nervous as we prepare for lots of unknown adventures, obstacles, and encounters. Miami is an interesting place and almost like a foreign country in itself with lots of "perfect" people walking along the beach. It feels like a long ways away from Nashville.

Last Day at the Nashville City Paper....Next Stop Brazil
Wednesday was my last day at the City Paper here in Nashville, Tennessee. After a year at The City Paper, Terry and I decided to head to Brazil to work with an NGO in Rio de Janeiro and work on some personal projects, as well as hopefully freelance for as many people as humanly possible. Can't wait to see the beaches, feel the warm air, and photograph life.
